i. Searching print materials
Before searching the library shelves to identify location of books and other materials, users are requested to familiarize with the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), a web- based library catalogue that is used to search and locate library materials.
The UDSM Library OPAC integrates bibliographic records of the Colleges, Schools, Institutes, and departmental libraries at the Mwalimu Nyerere campus of the University of Dar es Salaam.
The UDSM library OPAC uses a user-friendly interface that allows users to conduct simple, advanced or expert searches using the Boolean operators. Users can search materials by title, author, organization, keyword search and subject or even by year of publication.
Search result yields the requested information such as the title of the book, author name, publication statement, and section of the library where the item is located.
The result also includes class mark number of the book, availability status and whether the item can be borrowed or not.
Users may access OPAC through the University of Dar es Salaam website http://www.udsm.ac.tz or direct through the following address: https://www.udsm.ac.tz/web/index.php/
institutes/library.
ii. Access to Electronic Resources
The Library subscribes to a range of electronic resources including e-journals, e-books and both online and in off-line media covering diverse subject areas.
Users can search and retrieve these resources while using the University Internet network. The library arranges with some vendors to offer access to their materials while the user are off-campus or even when users are using their private Internet network.
Users can access resources in stand-media through CD-ROMs which are available in the digital collection. Users should consult the Reference section for guidance on using such materials or send an email to [email protected]
Users are requested to take a brochure with the list of subscribed e-journals/e-books database from the information desk to see the available resources.
For more help, users should consult the reference section for guidance on how to search and retrieve the information they want.
The Law Collection
The Law Collection is divided into two sections: open and closed access. Open access section consists of monographs which can be openly accessed and borrowed while the closed access, that is a Special Reserve Collection houses materials which are on great demand by both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The Collection offers the following services:
(i) Information to readers
Information services in this section are provided to library users upon request.
(ii) Online Public Access Catalogs (OPACs)
This is simply a Library Catalog, an online database of materials held by our library. The library users search library catalogs principally to locate books and other materials physically that are allocated in the library. An individual can search documents by entering author, title or key word(s) a required space/line and access the required material(s).
(iii) Lending UDSM Library Materials
Holders of a valid identity card issued by the main library of University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), are for Library purposes only and the library users may borrow and return materials in the main library and departmental libraries at main campus.
A UDSM library card is not to be lent or transferred. Each registered library user may borrow a maximum of 5 books for undergraduates, 10 for post-graduate student and 20 for faculty member with a limited time of twenty one days (3 weeks).
(iv) Issuing Special Reserve Materials
Materials from the Special Reserve section are issued on short loan periods of two to four hours and must be read within the Collection.
This service is extremely valued by the faculty and the users because it makes core reading materials available to a wider section of the students in the three disciplines in an environment where such materials are fewer and too expensive to be purchased individually.
(v) CD-ROM and on-line references
These are made available to users through the reference collection. The most frequently accessed is the Tanzania Law Reports CD-ROMs, and other electronic resources such as the Internet.
(vi) Photocopying of Serial and Special Reserve Materials
This service is provided through the use of a photocopying machine located in the collection and the central photocopying services of the UDSM Library.
